Gukesh’s father, Dr. Rajnikanth, is an ENT surgeon and his mother Padma is a microbiologist. His father left his medical career to support his son’s chess aspirations. He accompanies him to tournaments and manages his social media, invitations etc.

Gukesh D Early Life & Career
Gukesh learned to play chess at the age of seven when he was introduced to the game by his school, the Velammal Vidhyalaya in Chennai. His first coach at the school, Mr. Bhaskar, started training him and within just six months, he become a FIDE-rated player. In 2015, he won the under-9 section at the Asian School Chess Championships and earned the candidate master (CM) title.
In 2018, he won five gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in the:
- Under-12 individual classical, rapid and blitz events
- Under-12 team rapid and blitz
Around this time, Gukesh was also fulfilling his IM norms as an 11-year-old. For this he needed, 3 IM norms. In October 2017, he earned the first one at the First Friday tournament in Malaysia, while his final IM norm came in March 2018. He became an international master at 11 years, 9 months and 9 days old.
Gukeh become second youngest grandmaster
In January 2019, at the age of 12 years, 7 months and 17 days, Gukesh earned the grandmaster title, but missed being the youngest one to achieve that by 17 days.
In 2022, he achieved a live rating over 2700, becoming the fourth youngest player ever to do so.
The year 2023 is when he new heights as he became the youngest player ever to win the FIDE Candidates Tournament, qualifying him for the World Chess Championship.
In September 2024, D. Gukesh secured a remarkable victory at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad held in Budapest. He won his second consecutive individual gold medal as well as played a pivotal role in leading the Indian men’s team to a historic gold medal.
