TP Madhavan was born to N. P. Pillai and Saraswathi. His father was a distinguished professor. His younger brother was named Narayanan and sister was named Radhamani. Madhavan’s lineage includes notable figures; he was the nephew of dramatist T. N. Gopinathan Nair and the grandson of linguist P. K. Narayana Pillai.
Madhavan married Sudha, but their marriage ended in divorce. They had two children: a son, Raja Krishna Menon and a daughter, Devika.

After completing his Masters in Sociology, he applied for army. He got selected but had to withdraw after his hand got fracture. Later, he worked in a newspaper and then started an advertising agency. Madhavan’s acting career began unusually late; he entered the film industry at the age of 40 after meeting actor Madhu, who offered him a role in the film Priya. His debut came with the 1975 film Raagam. He first started with villianous roles and then transitioned to comedic and character roles. His notable films include Nadodikkattu, Sandesam, Vietnam Colony, and Narasimham.
TP Madhavan was the first General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). He served 2 tenures from 1994 to 1997 and later from 2000 to 2006.
