Subramanian Swamy Early Life
Subramanian Swamy was born on September 15, 1939 in Mylapore, Chennai, to a Tamil Brahmin family originally from Madurai. His father Sitaraman Subramanian was an officer in the Indian Statistical Service who served as the director of the Central Statistical Institute in Delhi. His mother Padmavathi was a homemaker. He was the older child with a younger brother and two sisters. The family moved to New Delhi when Swamy was just 6 months old due to his father’s job.
Growing up, major national leaders like K. Kamaraj, C. Rajagopalachari and S. Satyamurti often visited the Subramanian household because of the family’s Tamil roots and his father’s position.
Swamy studied at Hindu College, University of Delhi to graduate in Mathematics. He then went on to the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata to obtain his master’s degree in Statistics. He was just 24 years old when he completed his doctorate in 1965 from Harvard under the supervision of Nobel laureate Simon Kuznets.

In 1966, Subramanian Swamy married Roxna Swamy who was pursuing her Ph.D. in mathematics at Harvard University. They have two daughters: Gitanjali Swamy who is an entrepreneur and private equity professional, and Suhasini Haidar, a prominent journalist, and the Diplomatic Editor of The Hindu.

Subramanian Swamy Career
After obtaining his doctorate, Swamy joined Harvard as an assistant professor in the Department of Economics. He later became an associate professor and taught at Harvard intermittently until 2011.
In 1969, he moved back to India and became a professor of Mathematical Economics at IIT Delhi, where he taught until 1991.
Political Career
- Early Involvement: Swamy’s political career began with his involvement in the Sarvodaya movement, which later led to the formation of the Janata Party. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1974 and served until 1976. He was also elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times between 1977 and 1999, representing constituencies in Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh.
- Leadership Roles: Swamy served as the President of the Janata Party from its inception until it merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2013. He has been a prominent member of the BJP since then and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha again in 2016, serving until 2022.
