In 2013, he joined Aam Aadmi Party and ran as an independent candidate in the 2014 Assembly elections. In December 2020, Malik achieved a notable victory by winning a seat in the District Development Council elections.
In the 2024 Jammu & Kashmir elections, Mehraj won a seat from Doda and opened the account for Aam Aadmi Party in the state. He defeated BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana by 4770 votes.
