After completing his degree, he ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing himself as a successful businessman in the automobile sector. In 2002, he founded the Jamkash Vehicleades Group, a leading automobile enterprise in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly recognized as a top seller of Maruti vehicles in North India. Additionally, Rana expanded his business portfolio by founding Take One Television and Technologies Pvt Ltd., a news and media organization. Cuurently, his daughter Devyani is the CEO of TakeOne.

Rana’s political journey began with the major J&K political party, National Conference (NC). He quickly rose through the ranks to become a key strategist and advisor in the party. He got a major responsibility in the party when he was slected as the Provincial President of NC in Jammu. Soon with his political acumen and work he became a close aide to Omar Abdullah .In his first electoral contest for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Rana won the Nagrota seat as an NC candidate against BJP’s Jugal Kishore Sharma.
