Uthappa grew up in a family with a sporting background; his father, Venu Uthappa, was an international hockey umpire and later served as the president of the Karnataka Hockey Association. At the age of 10, Uthappa suffered from epilepsy, which interfered in his weight management. However, it didn’t deter his passion for cricket. In his college, he began honing his cricketing skills more dedicatedly.
His profile came to public attention during the Challenger Trophy, scoring 66 runs for India B against India A. The following year, he made headlines with a match-winning century (100 runs off 93 balls) in the same tournament, which led to his selection for the senior national team.
On 9 April 2006, he made his international ODI debut against England making 86 runs, setting a record for the highest score by an Indian debutant in limited-overs cricket. Uthappa was also a key player in India’s triumph at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, where he made significant contributions throughout the tournament.
Over the years, Uthappa played for various franchises in the IPL and had notable stints with teams like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he was the leading run-scorer in the 2014 season. His domestic career was equally impressive; he finished as the highest run-scorer in multiple tournaments including the Ranji Trophy during the 2014-15 season.
Uthappa announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on September 14, 2022.
