Govinda was the youngest of 6 children of actor, producer, Arun Kumar Ahuja, and Nirmala Devi, a singer and actress. He comes from a mixed ethnicity family with his grandfather was Punjabi, while his grandmother was Sindhi. His family used to live in a bungalow at Carter Road, but moved to Virar after one of his father’s film production failed.
His elder brother Kirti Kumar is a film director.

Despite his family’s financial challenges, Govinda pursued his education and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Initially he aspired to be a banker as per his mother’s wishes, he inclined towards acting after watching the film Disco Dance. He started auditioning for film roles, but faced numerous rejections. He landed his first significant role in the film Ilzaam (1986), which marked the beginning of his career, though his breakthrough came with Tan-Badan, also released in 1986.
In the 80s and 90s, Govinda quickly became a household name. He starred in over 120 films and became known for his comedic roles and dance performances. His collaborations with director David Dhawan resulted in numerous hit comedies such as Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, and Deewana Mastana (1997). Govinda was hospitalized early on October 1, 2024, after accidentally shooting himself in the leg with his own revolver. The incident occurred around 4:45 AM at his residence in Juhu, Mumbai, while he was preparing to leave for a flight to Kolkata. He was rushed to Criti Care Hospital, where doctors successfully removed the bullet. His manager confirmed that he is now stable and recovering well. The Mumbai police have initiated an investigation into the incident and have taken possession of the firearm. They plan to record his statement once he is well enough to do so.
