Mukund wanted to join Indian Air Force like his cousins. His this idea was dismissed by his parents, as he was their only son. He completed his education in Chennai and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree, followed by a Masters in Mass Communication & Journalism. He surprised his parents by joining the Army, where he was commissioned into the 22 Rajput Regiment in 2011.

Military Career and Operations

Varadarajan’s family legacy inspired him to join the military. So, after completing his B.Com he applied for Indian Army. His military career was marked by a series of commendable assignments, including participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions. Eventually he was assigned to the 44 Rashtriya Rifles, where he led several operations against insurgents.

Mukund Varadarajan Death

On April 25, 2014, Major Mukund got an intelligence about the presence of militants including a top Hizbul commander in the Shopian district. He spearheaded an anti-terrorist operation to neutralize them. During this operation, Major Varadarajan and his team came under heavy fire from the militants. Displaying remarkable tactical acumen, he ordered his men to avoid heavy weaponry to prevent civilian casualties. He and his comrade, Sepoy Vikram Singh, crawled under fire to engage the terrorists directly. In the ensuing firefight, they neutralized the threats but at a grave cost. Vikram Singh was severely injured and later succumbed to his wounds. In a moment of valor, Major Varadarajan charged forward despite being wounded himself and successfully eliminated the militant commander Altaf Wani before succumbing to his injuries. Mukund’s last words to his colleagues were ‘Please take care of my parents, wife and child”.

In January 2015, Major Mukund Varadarajan as posthumously awarded theĀ Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, for his courageous actions during the operation.

  1. This was really emotional, Some people are sacrificing themselves to their countries. Mad Respect To this guy, I hope he is resting peace. His family must be really proud of him even though god didn’t give enough time to live. People should be respecting to those Soldiers.
