Balaji was born and raised in Cupertino, California, in a supportive environment that fostered his interest in technology. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he pursued a degree in computer science, graduating in 2021 with an impressive GPA of 3.98.

During that time, he did multiple internships in Machine Learning at companies like OpenAI, Scale AI and Helia to understand cutting-edge technologies.

After completing his studies, Balaji joined OpenAI in November 2020. Over nearly four years, he contributed to significant projects such as WebGPT and the pretraining of GPT-4. His role involved gathering and organizing vast amounts of internet data for training AI models.

After the launch of OpenAI in 2022, Balaji become increasingly concerned about the company’s practices of using copyrighted content to train the model. In August 2024, he resigned from the company. “This is not a sustainable model for the internet ecosystem as a whole,” he told the New York Times in an interview. This was the first time someone at a higher post in the company spoke out about ethical and legal implications of the model.

In their statement OpenAI said that they have used publicly available following all legal rules.

On 26 November, 2024 around 1 pm police did a welfare check at Balaji’s Lower Haight residence after his friends raised concern. He was found dead with no signs of foul play.
