Shailaja Paik Family
Shailaja was born into a Dalit family in Pohegaon, Maharashtra to Sarita and Devram Paik. Her family moved to Pune in 1960s, where they lived in a 20*20 feet room. She and her sisters in that slum area where they didn’t have access to toilets. Paik’s father played a crucial role in promoting education for his daughters, encouraging them to overcome societal prejudices. He himself studied at something called the Night School and got a bachelor degree in Agriculture-becoming the first man in his village to do so. Her mother, despite limited formal education, introduced Shailaja to English alphabets.
Her father passed away in 1996. One of her sister, Rohini works as a senior officer in the public works department and another sister, Kirti, is a doctor residing in London.

Shailaja’s initial dream was to become a bureaucrat, by cracking UPSC. She even cleared the preliminary and mains exam and was preparing for her interview. But, her passed away, so she couldn’t appear for interview. Paik then gave up on dream and began her academic career as a lecturer at Kirti College in Mumbai. She later held positions at several prestigious institutions, including Union College and Yale University, before joining the University of Cincinnati in 2010 as a distinguished professor of history.
