His entry into full time theatre was marked by the success of his first play, “Mrityur Chokhe Jal,” which won him his first prize in a statewide competition. This achievement solidified his commitment to the arts over academia. By 1972, he achieved a great reputation as a theatre artist with the play “Chak Bhanga Madhu”.
Mitra’s artistic zeal led him to playwrighting. He authored over 100 plays that often tackled social and political issues through humor and fantasy. His notable works include “Sajano Bagan,” “Narak Guljar,” “Aswathama,” and “Galpo Hekim Saheb.” He founded the theatre group Sundaram and later formed Ritayan but returned to Sundaram. His plays were focused on the struggles of the common man and often critiqued societal norms and injustices.
In addition to writing, Mitra was an accomplished actor and director. He acted in numerous films, including Tapan Sinha’s “Banchharamer Bagan,” which was based on his own play “Sajano Bagan.” He has been a part of Satyajit Ray’s classics like Ghare Baire and Ganashatru.
